Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitoes bombers raided locomotive works near Nantes and surrounding areas.

North Africa. 15th Panzer Division regained greater part of the British 8th Army's bridgehead in Mareth positions, and attacked United States of America troops near El Guettar.

Russian Front. Soviet troops captured Slavyanskaya in the Kuban from the Wehrmacht ground forces after intensive battles.

In India. Enemy aircraft attacked airfield in Southeast Bengal.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 22-23 March 1943 Wellingtons hit El Maou airfield near Sfax. During the day, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping in Bizerte harbour. Fighters fly reconnaissance and patrol, bomb and strafe trucks, tanks, and troops near Bir Zallujah hit tanks and trucks East of Mezzouna and Maknassy, and East of El Guettar, where enemy ground forces are making thrusts toward the town.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Messina, concentrating on ferry slip. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Mareth area. P-40 fighters fly fighter-bomber operations and bomber escort over battle area as British 50th Division withdraws Oued Zigzaou bridgehead under cover of artillery fire.

Tenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb barracks, warehouse, railroad tracks, and airfield at Meiktila.

Fourteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe operations building at Dong Cuong and hit troop trucks between Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers thoroughly pound airfields in the Rabaul area and strafe vessel off Cape Gazelle. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe forces in Mubo area and at mouth of Bitoi River. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strafe targets in Salamaua, Labu Lagoon and Nadzab areas, and at mouth of Markham River. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Lorengau harbour and airfields at Gasmata and Salamaua.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather grounds all missions except weather reconnaissance and an unsuccessful intercept attempt of an enemy reconnaissance aeroplane by 2 P-40 fighters.
