on sea sweep attack vessels near Zembra Island while B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping in harbour at
Palermo. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters
fly numerous reconnaissance and patrol missions while A-20
Havoc light bombers bomb Mezzouna and fighter-bombers hit
motor transport and tanks in North Tunisian battle area.
Ninth Air Force. Colonel John D Corkille succeeds General
Kauch in command of IX Air Service Command. During

under IX Bomber Command, bomb Naples. During the day, B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit Gabes area, bombing road junction,
motor transport, and troop concentration. P-40 fighters fly

March 1943, are severely handicapped by heavy rain. Enemy
counterattack forces 50th Division to give ground.
Tenth Air Force. 17 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers, operating in 2 forces, bomb Gokteik
Viaduct. Several damaging hits are scored on the base and
structure. 7 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Thazi rail
junction. Considerable damage is caused to warehouses, yards,
sidings, tracks, and rolling stock.
Fourteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters again strafe phosphate mine area at Lao Kay.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy
bombers pound Gasmata airfield and, in single-plane strikes,
attack Finschhafen, Lae, Madang, and harbour at Lorengau.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-38 Lightning fighters strafe Rekata Bay area.
Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 12 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers,
and 22 P-38 Lightning fighters attempt 3 missions to Kiska.
Only 8 of the P-40 fighters get through but fly uneventful
patrol.
