Events On This Day

North Africa. United States of America and British troops forced the Afrika Corps to withdrawal in Kasserine area in Central Tunisia.

Russian Front. Soviet troops occupied Sumi, West of Kharkov, and Maloarkhangelsk, on Kursk-Orel railway.

In India. Japanese air force bombers attacked American air base in Northeast Assam.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack shipping North of Cap Bon, claiming 1 vessel sunk. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Kairouan airfield and hit troops retreating through Kasserine Pass. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Kasserine Pass and bridge nearby. A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighters also attack retreating columns in Kasserine area.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Messina ferry slip, scoring several direct hits and leaving target area burning. During the late evening B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Arram in the Mareth Line.

Tenth Air Force. 46 Japanese bombers and fighters are intercepted over Chabua airfield by P-40 fighters. In running battle the P-40 fighters claim at least 14 planes shot down. 8 P-40 fighters knock out railroad bridge West of Myitkyina. Several heavy bombers attack bridge at Myitnge; the strike fails to damage the structure itself but batters the South approach.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers continue to pound occupied villages and trails in Buibuining-Waipali and Guadagasal-Mubo areas. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe Angari and Yangla. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb town and harbour area of Rabaul.

Eleventh Air Force. Over Kiska 17 bombers and 8 fighters bomb Main Camp area while an F-5A reconnaissance aircraft flies a photo reconnaissance mission.
