Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. Airfields in Sicily again attacked by day. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided San Giovanni, Italy, at night.

India. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Hurricanes destroyed or damaged nearly half force of Japanese aircraft raiding airfield at Chittagong.

Moscow announced that Communist Third international (Comintern) was to be dissolved.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). As diversion for convoy passing off Sicily during 21-22 May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons fly intrusion mission over Sicily, dropping bombs on Castelvetrano, Sciacca, Milo, and Bo Rizzo airfields. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters fly convoy escort.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly sea patrol off Northeast Tunisia.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb town of Kaimana and strafe power launches at Koer Island.

Eleventh Air Force. Bad weather forces cancellation of all missions. 15 enemy bombers make a torpedo attack on cruiser Charleston and destroyer Phelps patrolling Attu. The ships suffer only negligible damage.
