Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. Over 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Beauvais, Tille airfield. Bad weather causes more than 20 medium bombers to abort.

Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit bridge and town area at Benevento. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit landing craft and ferry near Elba and bridges at Cancello Arnone and Capua. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on Detached Service from Eighth Air Force bomb Leghorn and Bastia. Medium bombers and fighter-bombers of Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) and XII A Support Command hit town areas, troop concentrations, trucks and tanks, and targets in Solofra, Avellino, Benevento areas.

Ninth Air Force. Headquarters IX Fighter Command at Tripoli closes.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) aircraft hit Tami Islands and pound Finschhafen in preparation for Allied amphibious assault on following day. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe Bogadjim area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Cape Gloucester and a freighter near Talasea. A-20 Havoc light bombers, and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft bomb Gasmata. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Langgoer.

Fourteenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 8 P-40 fighters attack railroad yards and warehouses at Chiuchiang, causing considerable destruction.

Thirteenth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb runway and revetment area at Buka Island airfield. About 20 Japanese fighters intercept. 2 Zeros are shot down.
