The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitoes again bombed
Berlin.
In Burma. It was announced that long-range jungle force of
British, Indian and Burmese troops had returned from three
months wrecking operations in enemy occupied territory.
In Australasia. Japanese air force bombers, made abortive
raid on Exmouth Gull, Western Australia.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters escort ships and fly sea patrol off Cap Bon and Kelibia
area.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
19-20
May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons
bomb Villacidro and Decimomannu airfields. During day, P-38
Lightning fighters bomb docks on Gulf of Aranci, railroad
bridge Northeast of Perfugas, Milis airfield, Macomer rail
junction, and targets at Sassari, Bonnanaro, Chilivani, and
Bonorva. Other P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters strafe
and bomb Pantelleria. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Villacidro,
Alghero, and Decimomannu airfields while B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers strike Grosseto airfield.
Fifth Air Force. Airfield and surrounding area at Gasmata
are hit by A-20 Havoc light bombers during 20-
21
May 1943 and by B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers during
day. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb Vunakanau airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers sink several barges offshore between Madang and Cape
Cretin.
Thirteenth Air Force. During 20-
21
May 1943 May, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers
on snooper missions bomb Kahili area and Ballale Island.
Eleventh Air Force. All air ground support missions to Attu
are cancelled due to weather. 20 P-40 fighters bomb Main Camp
and submarine area at Kiska, and strafe barges in the harbour.
The remaining Japanese on Attu are concentrated in the Chichagof
Harbour area.
