Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Capua and
Aversa marshalling yard, while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
bomb Benevento marshalling yard, and P-40 fighters attack
airfields at Monserrato. Northwest African Tactical Air Force
(NATAF) fighters hit road and railway at Gioia and trucks
near Locri during missions along East and West coast of Italian
toe.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters strafe and bomb shipping off Italian toe and command
targets on land. Hits are scored on bridges, railway yards,
and railway cars.
China-Burma-India (CBI) Army Air Force, India-Burma Sector,
China-Burma-India Theatre is activated at New Delhi. General
Stratemeyer assumes command . Components include Tenth Air
Force, China-Burma-India (CBI) Air Service Command (Provisional),
China-Burma-India (CBI) Training Unit (Provisional), and several
lesser units.
Tenth Air Force. X Air Force Services Command personnel and
organisations are absorbed by China-Burma-India (CBI) Air
Service Command (Provisional) which is activated on this date
at New Delhi. General Oliver, Commanding General X Air Force
Services Command, becomes Commanding General China-Burma-India
(CBI) Air Service Command.
Fourteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with fighters escort, bomb
Tien Ho airfield at Canton; the medium bombers and fighters
claim 5 interceptors shot own. 15 P-40 fighters intercept
21 fighters over Kweilin, 2 P-40 fighters and 21 Zeros are
shot down.
Fifth Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers, escorted by 46 P-38 Lightning fighters,
hit Boram airfield in late morning; P-38 Lightning fighters
claim 19 fighters shot down. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb
Lae and hit Salamaua area where enemy forces have abandoned
positions on Mount Tambu and Komiatum Ridge and are manning
last ditch defensive position at Salamaua. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers strafe barges near Cape Gloucester.
Thirteenth Air Force. Headquarters XIII Bomber Command moves
from Espiritu Santo to Guadalcanal.
