Eighth Air Force. Report by intelligence section of Eighth
Air Force shows that despite recent efforts of Allies to destroy
Luftwaffe aircraft industry, fighters production has expanded
greatly and enemy fighters strength on the Western Front has
increased.
Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-26 Marauder medium
bombers hit command targets in Capua, Grazzanise, Arce, and
Mignano areas. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, including heavy
bombers on DS from Eighth Air Force, bomb Wiener Neustadt.
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, sent against aeroplane
factory at Augsburg, fail to locate target, and bomb several
alternate targets and targets in Austria, Italy, and off Corsica
and Elba. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF)
and XII A Support Command medium bombers, light bombers, and
fighter-bombers hit Benevento town area and marshalling yard,
bridge at Capua, and motor transport, trains, and railroads
mainly in Isernia area and North to Avezzano. British King's
Dragoon Guards (with United States Fifth Army) occupy Naples.
British Eighth Army troops occupy Foggia airfields.
Tenth Air Force. Tenth Air Force fighters situation has improved
with arrival of the 80th Fighter Group (P-40 fighters) and
311th fighter-bomber Group (A-36 Apache dive bomber and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers),
and the activation of an additional squadron for the 80th
Group. The new squadron, 459th flies P-38 Lightning fighters,
the first to be used in India.
Fourteenth Air Force. 21 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, supported by 21 fighters, bomb
power plant, warehouse and dock area at Hiaphong. 40-65 fighters
intercept, shooting down 2 United States aircraft. 30 fighters
are claimed destroyed by Fourteenth in air battle.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF)
aircraft bomb and strafe Finschhafen area as Australian 9th
Division pours more troops into the assault on the town. B-25
Mitchell medium bombers strafe power boat near Gasmata.
Thirteenth Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb supply and bivouac area
North of Vila airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-38
Lightning fighters join Navy dive bombers in strike on barge
depot at Kakasa.
