Eighth Air Force. Progress report, assessing results of Combined
Bomber Offensive (Plan), estimates that 19 important German
towns and cities have been virtually destroyed, 19 severely
damaged, and 9 more effectively damaged. Joint report of Ministry
of Economic Warfare and Air Ministry Intelligence Branch claims
that 10 percent of total war potential of Germany has been
destroyed.
Ninth Air Force. Ninth Air Force comes under operational control
of Allied Expeditionary Air Force (AEAF) which is activated
on this date to provide the tactical air force for the invasion
of West Europe (OVERLORD).
Twelfth Air Force. With activation of Fifteenth Air Force
on this date, the units of XII Bomber Command transfer to
the new Air Force. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force
(NATBF) aircraft bomb shipping in harbours of Ancona and Split,
hit tunnel mouth near Antrodoco, and attack scattered gun
positions and motor transport on both United States Fifth
and British Eighth Army fronts. XII A Support Command hits
numerous bridges and junctions and town of Pontecorvo. Desert
Air Force (DAF) hits inland roads and vehicles in advance
of battle line, shipping at Split, and town of Carpinone.
Fifteenth Air Force. Fifteenth Air Force is activated, with
Headquarters at Tunis and General Doolittle as Commanding
General. The Fifteenth Air Force includes 6 heavy bomber groups,
5 medium bombers groups, and 4 fighters groups. B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers bomb town and harbour of La Spezia
and railroad bridge at Vezzano. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
hit marshalling yards at Rimini and Ancona. Fighters fly escort.
Fourteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 9 P-40 fighters bomb Yoyang
railroad yards.
Fifth Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Maniang Island and nearby Pombelaa.
A lone B-24 Liberator heavy bombers scores hit on ship off
Kavieng.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Marines land on Bougainville.
This operation is aimed at eliminating the last Japanese strongholds
Southeast of Rabaul. Allied fighters covering the operations
shoot down more than 20 Japanese aircraft. Naval gunfire accounts
for several more. 21 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili
airfields. Kara airfield is attacked by 19 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers, 30 P-40 fighters and P-39 fighters, and more
than 70 Navy fighters and dive bombers. P-38 Lightning fighters
on sweep over waters North West of the Solomons claim 7 Zeros
shot down. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strafe barges and
wharf area at Faisi. During 1-

West of Cape Saint George.
