Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-38 Lightning
fighters fly uneventful shipping sweeps. Northwest African
Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters and Light bombers hit
shipping in Gulf of Tunis and jetties at Sidi Daoud and Kelibia,
and attack position in Northeast Tunisian battle area as Allied
ground forces regroup for final Tunisian offensive.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb harbour at Reggio di Calabria.
P-40 fighters bomb and strafe shipping and shore installations
on Northeast Tunisian coastline.
Fourteenth Air Force. Forward echelon of Fourteenth Air Force,
under Colonel Clinton D Vincent and Lieutenant Colonel David
L ('Tex') Hill, moves into East China along the Hengyang-Kweilin
line. This brings United States aircraft within range of all
major Japanese held bases from North China to Indochina and
Thailand, and makes shipping in China Sea more vulnerable
to United States air strikes.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb landing strip at Nabire and hit
vessel in Manokwari harbour.
Eleventh Air Force. 16 attack missions on Kiska and Attu are
flown by 16 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 15 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers, 35 P-38 Lightning fighters, 38 P-40 fighters,
and 4 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft. Kiska targets include
Main Camp, hangar, submarine base (where fire is started),
runway, radar, ship, North Head, antiaircraft guns and Gertrude
Cove. Attu targets include East Attu, Holtz Bay and Chichagof
Harbour installations.
Zone of Interior. I Bomber Command (inactivated on
15
October 1942) is activated and assigned to Second Air
Force as a training organisation for bomb units.
