Events On This Day

Berlin had its biggest air attack of the war.

Heinz Guderian Heinz Guderian on 1 March 1943 becomes the Inspector-General of the Armoured Troops for the Wehrmacht Armee.



North Africa. In Central Tunisia Sbeitla was reoccupied by Allied forces, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps attacks in the north died down.

In the Mediterranean. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers raided Naples and made two attacks on Palermo.

Russian Front. It was announced that in new offensive Marshal Timoshenko had captured Demyansk and other places in Lake Ilmen region, on northern front.

In Australasia. It was announced from General Douglas MacArthur's Headquarters that air reconnaissance had revealed growing Japanese strength in islands north of Australia.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). General Cannon takes command of Northwest African Training Command (NATC). B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb docks and shipping, also hit railroad yards and town area, at Cagliari. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers of Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) attack bridges and antiaircraft gun positions in La Hencha area. Other B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack freighter Northeast of Bizerte. Fighters escort bombers and hit ground forces in battle areas around Sidi Nsir and Bedja. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) bomb Mateur area.

Twelfth Air Force. General Spaatz assumes command of Twelfth Air Force in Algeria. Colonel Lawrence P Hickey becomes acting commander of XII Fighter Command until arrival of General Quesada.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers raid harbour at Naples; 1 bombs Soverato while 2 others hit Staletti and Catanzaro as targets. Antiaircraft fire is accurate and several heavy bombers are hit over Naples and Palmi.

Tenth Air Force. 46 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters hit targets in Nsopzup area and throughout Hukawng Valley.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe forces at Guadagasal and along trails throughout Mubo, Komiatum, and Salamaua area. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb runway at Gasmata. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers carry out single-plane attacks on shipping off Soemba and Soembawa, and in Solomon Sea.

Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters jettison their bombs when bad weather prevents a sweep over Kiska.
