B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb airfields at Chievres, Cambrai,
Epinoy, Lille, Vendeville, and Cambrai, Niergnies. 28 P-51
Mustang fighter-bombers execute a sweep over North West France,
marking first Ninth Air Force fighters operation from United
Kingdom.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb gun positions in Sant' Ambrogio
area. Fighter-bombers (including some The British Royal Air
Force (RAF), Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), and South
African Air Force (SAAF) aircraft) hit trucks, gun positions,
and other military targets East of Casoli, at Lanciano, near
Guardiagrele, West of Mignano, West of Minturno, and near
Chieti. Several of these missions are in support of United
States Fifth and British Eighth Army.
Fifteenth Air Force. Headquarters closes at Tunis and opens
at Bari. Over 100 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb
Turin ball bearing works and marshalling yard. Escorting P-38
Lightning fighters battle enemy fighters without either losses
or positive victories. Heavy bombers claim 2 enemy fighters
shot down. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and other P-38 Lightning
fighters are recalled because of weather. B-26 Marauder medium
bombers, with fighters escort, attack bridges and railroad
facilities at Aulla, Cecina, and Sestri Levante.
Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Insein. The heavy bombers and
escorting P-38 Lightning fighters encounter large number of
Japanese fighters over the targets. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
which failed to make rendezvous with the heavy bombers before
the attack join the formations on return trip. United States
losses are high. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and a P-51
Mustang fighter-bombers shot down and 5 more heavy bombers
are seriously damaged. Medium bombers hit the newly repaired
bridge at Myitnge, rendering it temporarily unserviceable.
Fourteenth Air Force. 19 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 24 P-40 fighters, and 10 P-51
Mustang fighter-bombers pound Kowloon shipyards. 2 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers hit nearby Taikoo Docks, Hong Kong. 4 P-40
fighters strafe truck convoy near Lashio, 16 sink about 30
boats in area around Changte, and 8 bomb Bac Ninh and vicinity.
Fifth Air Force. 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Wewak, the heavy bombers and
P-47 Thunderbolt fighters escorts claiming 11 enemy fighters
shot down out of interception force of about 50. 3 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers are lost. 16 A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Cape
Gloucester area. 35 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26
Marauder medium bombers bomb Borgen Bay area.
Thirteenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters
attack Malai. P-39 fighters strafe Tonolai and support Navy
dive bombers in attack on Jaba River area near Empress Augusta
Bay. Other Army Air Force and Navy fighters cover dive bomber
strikes on Kara and Ballale Island supply areas and strafe
targets at Tenekow, Chabai, and Mutupina Point. 6 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers bomb Sarime Plantation.
Seventh Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, flying out of Funafuti, bomb
