Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 36 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers attack Beauvais, Tille airfield. Attacks of medium bombers on Rouen power station and Beaumont-le-Roger airfield are aborted because of failure to rendezvous with fighters escort and bad weather, respectively.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of XII Bomber Command hit Viterbo airfield and Salerno-Avellino road, while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb airfields at Ciampino and Pratica di Mare. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers fire 75mm shells at small vessels and lighthouse near Capraia and between Pianosa and Corsica. P-38 Lightning fighters on Detached Service with Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) strafe 4 satellite airfields at Foggia and bomb roads, railroads, bridges, and towns in battle area. Seventh Army forces take Altavilla, Persano, and Battipaglia without opposition.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Pescara marshalling yard.

Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 7 P-40 fighters attack rail yards and blast furnaces at Shihhweiyao.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bomber hit Tami Islands in Lae area. B-26 Marauder medium bombers and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) air planes bomb and strafe Finschhafen.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields and attack phosphate plant and radio station on Nauru.

Seventh Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, flying out of Funafuti and Canton Island, bomb Betio, Maiana, and Abemama Islands in the Gilbert chain during 18-19 September 1943. This action is part of a coordinated Army Navy attack on Tarawa, aimed at preventing Japanese attacks on United States installations at Baker Island and in the Ellice Islands.
