Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 115 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers hit port area at Bremen. 25 heavy bombers bomb targets in Kiel Flensburg area. Bad weather causes over 100 aborts. 47 P-38 Lightning fighters escort the heavy bombers all the way to target (the longest escort mission by Eighth Air Force fighters to date) but are mauled badly by overwhelming number of fighters. 7 P-38 Lightning fighters fail to return to base.

Twelfth Air Force. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) light bombers hit Palena and Atina and later bomb Civitavecchia harbour and road West of Terracina. XII A Support Command fighter-bombers, along with Desert Air Force (DAF) aeroplanes, bomb Giulianova harbour and shipping, roads leading to battle zone, and landing grounds of Aquino, Frosinone, and Marcigliana. Fighters hit train and trucks in Pescara Rieti area.

Fifteenth Air Force. Weather limits operations to air sea rescue patrols, which are hampered by overcast.

Tenth Air Force. A single United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bomber mines Rangoon River during 13-14 November 1943.

Fifth Air Force. Nearly 120 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Alexishafen, and P-40 fighters strafe the area. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Gasmata, Kaukenau, and Timoeka. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Beaufighters claim sinking of small freighter off Tanimbar Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. 17 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound antiaircraft positions, dispersal areas, and runway at Bonis airfield. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers carry out low-level raid on Buka airfield. Night fighters harass Shortland Island and Kahili and Bonis airfields, claiming 4 grounded aeroplanes destroyed at the latter.

Seventh Air Force. Air attack for GALVANIC (assault on the Gilbert Islands begins. 18 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Funafuti bomb Tarawa. 1 heavy bomber is lost.

Henschel Hs 293
was used against the Royal Navy's Escort destroyer HMS Dulverton which was severely damaged off Kos, Dodecanese.
