Events On This Day

Ninth Air Force. Ninth Air Force issues Tables of Organisation for IX Fighter Command, authorising 2 air support divisions, 5 fighters wings, 1 reconnaissance group, 21 fighters groups, and 65 fighters squadrons. 3 combat wings are established for IX Bomber Command the 97th (a new light bomber wing), the 98th (a medium bombers wing, formerly the 3d Bomber Wing), and the 99th (a medium bombers wing, formerly the 44th Bomber Wing).

Twelfth Air Force. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) light bombers hit guns, troops, and railway facilities near Palena, town of Atina, and road at Acquafondata. Medium bombers hit Berat, Kucove airfield and oil refinery in Albania after failing to locate targets near Athens. During 12-13 November 1943 light bombers attack Arezzo marshalling yard and Perugia airfield. Fighter-bombers of XII A Support Command and Desert Air Force (DAF) continue to provide close support to United States Fifth and British Eighth Armies, blasting gun positions and motor transport, and also attacking targets (aircraft, guns, rail yards, bridge, and trains) around Bracciano Lake, Orbetello, Rieti, Sant' Elia Fiumerapido, Opuzen, Ancona, and Iesi.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack railroad bridges and tracks in Montalto di Castro and Orbetello areas, but heavy cloud cover prevents effective hits on the targets. P-38 Lightning fighters fly air sea rescue patrol off the Semeni River mouth.

Tenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers mine Rangoon River during 12-13 November 1943.

Fourteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 24 P-40 fighters attack Yoyang, hitting warehouse area, railroad yards, and antiaircraft positions. 5 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Yangchi Kang waterfront area and attack waterfront targets at Puchi. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 12 fighters hit targets at Yoyang. 15 P-40 fighters and a B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on armed reconnaissance hit several targets in Lungling area and between Yang-Chia-Kang and Sichai.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb villages between Finschhafen and Saidor. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack targets on Java and at Amboina. On this date, following a series of damaging allied strikes, Japanese remove their carrier aircraft from Rabaul, which afterwards ceases to be a serious threat to Allied forces.

Thirteenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Tarlena; 6 others bomb Matchin Bay area and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters strafe Bonis airfield.
