In the Mediterranean. Targets in Crete, Sicily, and Lampedusa
Islands attacked by Allied aircraft.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Castel Benito airfield
South of Tripoli, claiming destruction of at least 20 parked
aeroplanes. Heavy bombers claim destruction of 14 attacking
aircraft in aerial combat. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers sent
to hit shipping in Straits of Sicily and in Gulf of Gabes
fail to find targets and return with bombs. B-26 Marauder
medium bombers hit bridges at La Hencha and Chaaba, completely
destroying 1 bridge. Fighters fly patrols, reconnaissance,
and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft escort, and strafe moored
seaplanes and destroy numerous trucks during sweep over Ben
Gardane area.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters carry out 3 scramble interceptor missions, claiming
2 fighters shot down. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators,
under IX Bomber Command, hit Tripoli.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers, in single-plane actions, bomb Finschhafen
and Madang areas.
South Pacific (SOPAC). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-26 Marauder medium bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, P-39
fighters, and P-40 fighters attack Munda. Other P-39 fighters
hit forces on Guadalcanal.
Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers cover a small United States Army
and Navy force landing unopposed at Amchitka. 2 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters escorts also
on this cover mission turn back due to weather. Weather reconnaissance
is flown over Attu, Agattu, Semichis and, lastly, over Kiska
Harbour, where 4 ships are observed.
