Events On This Day

Russian Front. In Kharkov drive Russians captured Chuguyev. Soviet forces continued advances of 10 to 12 miles made in Bryansk region.

Milan (over 1,000 tons dropped) and Turin heavily raided. Berlin attacked by Mosquitoes.

Eighth Air Force. 243 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack targets in the Ruhr, concentrating on manufacturing installations at Bonn and synthetic oil industries at Gelsenkirchen. 26 aeroplanes are lost on mission.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack landing grounds at Crotone, and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Grazzanise airfield. Medium bombers claim 9 fighters shot down. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) P-40 fighters and A-36 Apache dive bomber hit shipping along Northeast coast of Sicily and in Straits of Messina, attack gun positions and vehicles at Capo Calava and East of Randazzo, and hit bridge at Taormina and roads in Maletto-Fiumefreddo areas. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) bombers attack Patti, Falcone, Barcellona, and Nunziata. United States Seventh Army continues to pursue enemy East along North coast. Further inland United States forces gain favourable position from which to assault Randazzo, but enemy withdraws during 12-13 August 1943, precluding attack. British Eighth Army seizes Maletto and Riposto.

Ninth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Falcone, Patti, Novara di Sicilia, and Barcellona. P-40 fighters bomb and strafe shipping at Messina.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Bogadjim Yaula road. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe Gasmata and nearby barges. A B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hits Cape Gloucester airfield.

Thirteenth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with P-40 and F4U Corsair fighter cover, bomb Kahili airfield, causing considerable damage in dispersal and runway areas. The Allied aeroplanes claim 11 Zeros shot down. 1 P-40 and 1 F4U Corsair fighter are lost.

Eleventh Air Force. From Adak B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers fly 26 bombing, strafing, and radar and photo reconnaissance sorties over Kiska targets. From Amchitka P-40 fighters, P-38 Lightning fighters, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and A-24 Banshee dive bomber fly 70 bombing sorties over the island and are joined by B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, P-40 fighters, and F-5A reconnaissance aircraft flying 6 reconnaissance and photo sorties. Targets include runway, harbour and shipping installations, army barracks, and Rose Hill area.
