yard: 111 others abort because of bad weather, which hinders
assembly. 1st Bomber Division's mission to bomb Wesel is aborted
over English Channel due to assembly difficulties and presence
of heavy frontal cloud, and all 175 heavy bombers return without
bombing.
Ninth Air Force. 157 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb military installations and
targets in Cherbourg area, mainly at Martinvast.
Twelfth Air Force. United States and The British Royal Air
Force (RAF) light bombers and fighter-bombers, in support
of United States Fifth and British Eighth Armies, hit troop
and gun concentrations and command in Rocca and Palena areas.
Other Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) aircraft
bomb town of Rocca, Bussi sul Tirino explosive works near
Popoli, and docks at Civitavecchia, and strafe strong points
at Roccaraso and Atessa. Fighters hit motor transport in coastal
area between Sangro and Pescara Rivers.
Fifteenth Air Force. 28 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Annecy ballbearing plant
and viaduct at Antheor.
Fourteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Burma Road about 375 miles
West of Tungling, producing landslide and badly damaging the
road. 6 P-40 fighters South of Yoyang knock out a gun emplacement
and hit a radio station, barracks, and hostels in the area.
8 more P-40 fighters, on armed reconnaissance in Li-Chou Ching-Shih
area, strafe pontoon bridge and troops, and sink a river steamer,
a motorboat, and several small supply boats.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Lakunai airfield. P-39 fighters
strafe Bogadjim; and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Madang
area.
Thirteenth Air Force. A few United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and Navy F4U Corsair fighter
strafe barges and shore installations on Matchin Bay. B-24
Liberator heavy bombers join Fifth Air Force, Navy carrier
aircraft, and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) aeroplanes
in attack on shipping in Rabaul harbour. This is the Thirteenth's
first strike on Rabaul. Escorting fighters claim 17 Japanese
fighters shot down while the heavy bombers claim 5.
Seventh Air Force. Japanese air force aircraft bomb Nanumea,
hitting airfield and destroying or damaging several aeroplanes,
including 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers.

which was badly damaged in the Aegean Sea.
