Events On This Day

In Sicily. It was announced that Allied forces had captured 3 airfields, including one at Pachino. It was reported that British and Canadians linked up on Cape Passero. Pozzallo and Noto were also captured.

Russian Front. Concentrated Wehrmacht ground forces attacks repulsed in Orel-Kursk area.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) planes hit Milo and Sciacca airfields during 10-11 July 1943 and numerous tactical targets during the day, including town areas, vehicle convoys, bridges, trains and roads. Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Catania marshalling yard while B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Milo airfield and Gerbini satellite airfields. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters hit Sciacca airfield and town of Caltanissetta. Throughout the day Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) fighters attack truck convoys on Sicilian highways, and hit gun positions and targets.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit airfields at Vibo Valentia and Reggio di Calabria. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields at Trapani, Milo and Bo Rizzo, and areas between Sciacca and Enna. P-40 fighters escort bombers and provide beach cover as invasion forces push inland in Sicily. United States Seventh Army's II Corps is hit by counter-attack, mainly in Gela region. Attack is repelled, but airdrop of contingent of 82d Airborne Division troops results in heavy casualties.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers hit port of Haiphong.

Fourteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Haiphong harbour area, 3 bomb shipping in Campha Port area, and 8 pound positions and barracks area at Kunlong. P-40 fighters strafe traffic between Lao Kay and Cha Pa and hit oil storage area South West of Lao Kay.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers blast positions in battle zone from Nassau Bay inland to Mubo area, hitting trail between Logui and Kennedy's Crossing, Bobdubi and Bobdubi Ridge areas, Salamaua, Kela Point, and villages scattered through the area. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Penfoei. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound airfields in Rabaul area.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack Kahili airfield, hitting revetments East and West of the strip.

Seventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Funa futi fly photo reconnaissance mission to Little Makin, 2 of the heavy bombers bomb the island.

Eleventh Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers take off to attack Paramushiru and fly shipping search but are turned back by bad weather. A shipping search by 5 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers finds nothing. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers in 3 missions (one by radar) attack North Head and Main Camp on Kiska with unobserved results. 4 P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance over Kiska sighting new excavations near Sredni Point, strafe tent near Haycock Rock, and also fly over Segula Island.
