Events On This Day

Another extremely heavy night-time bombing raids was carried out on the Ruhr and surrounding areas by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

North Africa. The Wehrmacht ground forces continued attacks on French troops in Tunisia were repulsed.

In the Mediterranean. Daylight raid on Naples.

Russian Front. Soviet troops occupied Georgievsk, Mineralniye Vody, Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk in the Caucasus.

In Australasia. During nigh 10-11 January 1943 United States of America torpedo boats torpedoed two Japanese surface destroyers and drove off others attempting to reinforce Guadalcanal.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb fort and town of Gadames and attack rail bridge and highway bridge across the Oued el Akarit, North North West of Gabes. Escorting P-38 Lightning fighters engage in 25 minutes of combat with attacking fighters, shooting down 1 and severely damaging another. 2 P-38 Lightning fighters are lost. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb shipping at northeast Tunisian coast. Escorting P-38 Lightning fighters claim 3 aircraft shot down. Other fighters fly patrol and reconnaissance, and escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft transport missions.

Ninth Air Force. During 10-11 January 1943, The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under IX Bonner Command control, bomb road junction at Tripoli. During daylight, United States B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit harbor at Naples. P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance and escort missions.

Tenth Air Force. Fighters attack Bhamo, destroying barges, tugs, warehouses, and other port facilities. The fighters also strafe fuel drums along road between Chefang and Mangshih and hit a truckful of soldiers near Ho-lu.

South Pacific (SOPAC). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-39 fighters hit Munda area.
