Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 523 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit docks and industrial area of Emden. 17 aircraft are lost to enemy action.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters and A-36 Apache dive bomber attack Anzio, Nettuno, Viticuso, San Vittore del Lazio, Pontecorvo, Acquafondata, railway siding at Arce, tracks and junction North of Ostia, and railway between Ostia and Lido di Roma. Weather causes abandonment of medium bombers operations.

Fifteenth Air Force. All operations except weather reconnaissance are cancelled or recalled because of bad weather.

Fourteenth Air Force. 14 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 10 P-40 fighters attack Shihshow and Ansiang. 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Hankow airfield. 9 P-40 fighters intercept about 30 aeroplanes over Nanchang shortly after the enemy force bombs Suichwan. The P-40 fighters claim 10 aircraft shot down.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe Borgen Bay area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit bivouacs and other installations near Fortification Point and in Finschhafen area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Makassar and Balikpapan.

Thirteenth Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, in 2 waves, attack Kahili. Several other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Arigua Plantation. 20 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb village and wharf area at Tsirogei. 8 P-39 fighters bomb Tonolai. Several aircraft on armed reconnaissance, operating individually or in small flights, attack targets scattered throughout Bougainville and Shortland area. Allied night fighters carry out strike on Japanese bivouac along Jaba River. Others hit Buka and Bonis.
