and B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters
attack bridge at Catanzaro. Northwest African Tactical Air
Force (NATAF) fighter-bomber's support United States Seventh
Army's landing East of Orlando by attacking troop concentrations,
gun positions, and command lines leading to the area. United
States Seventh Army forces take Naso and press closer to Randazzo.
Medium bombers support British Eighth Army by raiding Flumefreddo
and Randazzo area.
Ninth Air Force. Approximately 90 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb bridge, roads, railway,
and city area in and about Randazzo. About 170 P-40 fighters
hit Randazzo, shipping at Milazzo and Messina, road and train
near Messina, and troop movements and evacuations in Northeast
Sicily.
Fifth Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bomber on armed reconnaissance sinks enemy
freighter north-west of Kavieng. Second Air Task Force completes
movement to Tsili Tsili airfield.
Thirteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit supply area on East side
of Suavanau Point and at Papatura Fa Island.
Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-24
Banshee dive bomber, and P-38 Lightning fighters pound Kiska
targets in 11 attack missions. Later, 10 reconnaissance, strafing
and photo missions to Kiska are flown by 3 P-38 Lightning
fighters, 26 P-40 fighters, 4 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft
and 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. 9 B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers from Attu drop bombs and incendiaries on Paramushiru
Island targets, including Kash-iwabara airfield and Shimushu
Island where Kataoka naval base and staging area are hit.
40 enemy aircraft challenge the attackers, which score 4 confirmed
kills, 1 probable, and 4 possibles
