The British Admiralty announced the loss of the submarine
HMS P48 which was depth charged by two Italian torpedo boats,
Ardente and Ardito, North West of the island of Zembra on
the
25
December 1942. The submarine HMS P48 was officially declared
overdue on
5
January 1943.
North Africa. The British Eighth Army in contact with enemy
East of Ben Gardane in Tunisia.
In the Mediterranean. Allied air attacks on Palermo and railways
in Sicily.
Russian Front. Volchansk and Chuguyev in Ukraine was captured
from the Wehrmacht ground forces by Red Army.
In Australasia. United States of America commander on Guadalcanal
announced that the island was free of Japanese organised forces.
Paris radio announced that Lorient and Brest were to be evacuated.
Kriegsmarine U-boat,
U-519,
is sunk North West of Spain, 47-05N 18-34 West, by aircraft
of 2d Antisubmarine Squadron. However subsequently this was
found to be untrue.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers attack shipping between Tunisia and
Sicily, claiming 1 vessel sunk and another badly damaged.
Weather cancels other bomber missions. P-39 fighters and Spitfires
of XII A Support Command strafe gun batteries, machine gun
nests, vehicles, and troops in Maknassy-Station de Sened-Bou
Hamran area.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers sent to attack Palermo are forced
to abort because of bad weather. They jettison bombs or return
with them to base. 1 aircraft scores direct hits on Italian
highway. Rainfall delays British Eighth Army assault on Mareth
Line positions at Ben Gardane.
Tenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb rolling stock at Maymyo.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy aircraft attack Munda airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. The weather reconnaissance aircraft aborts
due to radio failure. 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 2 B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers, 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
, and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters attack Kiska. Hits are observed
on landing strip and near hangar and buildings. 2 patrol missions,
each by 4 P-38 Lightning fighters and 1 B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers, are flown over Amchitka.
