Events On This Day

Luftwaffe aeroplanes attacked, with bombs and machine guns merchant ships fishing craft and Trinity House vessel of the east coast.

The British steamers Gowrie, Oakgrove and Upminster were sunk, the steamer Northwood attacked, and the trawler Chrystalite disabled.

The Danish ships Ivan Kondrup and Feddy also attacked, but reached port

Union Castle liner Dunbar Castle sunk by a mine of the South East Coast.

The British tanker British Liberty was sunk.

The Dutch steamer Truida mined.

The British trawler River Earn reported sunk by Luftwaffe bomber in the North sea.

Russian communiqué, admitted that red troops had retreated several kilometres east of Suomussalmi. Russian aircraft raided six small towns in Finland.

It was reported that Leningrad Murmansk railway had again been cut by patrols.

The British Admiralty announced that out of 5,911 ships British Allied and neutral convoyed by British Navy, only 12 were sunk, while in convoy.

First colonial contingent from Cyprus landed in France to join British Expeditionary Force (BEF).

The creation of a royal air Force command in France is announced, with air Marshal A. S. Barratt as Commander-In-Chief.

Reported that Italy had made representations to Germany concerning detention in German imports of war supplies sent by Italy to Finland.
