Events On This Day

Artillery action and air activity reported from the Western front.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made a bombing raid on German seaplane base of Sylt. It was reported that Hindenburg dam connecting Island with mainland, was damaged. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft had a running fight with Messerschmitts Bf 109's over the North sea. One Luftwaffe fighter was destroyed and that these one other disabled. One British machine lost.

Helsinki reported battle in progress, northeast of Lake Ladoga. In Suomussalmi region Finns drove Russians back over frontier. Russians attacking in Salla sector with fresh troops Finns reported that 700 out of 1000 Russian bombers ranged on eastern frontier were snowbound and frozen up.

The Norwegian steamer Manx was mined in the North sea.

Sweden, passed emergency laws giving the government wide powers in case of war.

Adolf Hitler
Informs their commanders of the three armed forces, Hermann Göring (Luftwaffe), Eric Raeder (Kriegsmarine), and Walter von Brauchitsch (heer), that he intends to attack on the Western front on the 17th of January.

Mechelen Incident a Luftwaffe plane carrying Helmuth Reinberger and Erich Hoenmanns who was the pilot crash landed in Belgium, due to bad weather, carrying secret papers for the operation Fall Gelb, The authorities in Brussels fully understand. Adolf Hitler's intention to attack their country as well as the Netherlands.
