Events On This Day

Fight on Karelian Isthmus continued in desultory fashion. During the weekend Finns won a great victory in waistline area. Russian 44th division destroyed, 1000 prisoners and a large quantity of war material captured. Successors were also reported from further north, engagements on Salla and Petsamo fronts yielding much valuable booty.

Paris reported patrol activity in the region of Vosges.

New German Army Headquarters said to have been established at Recklingshausen 10 miles from the Dutch frontier.

It was reported that British liner Highland Patriot was attacked by a U-boat on 29 December 1939, but beat enemy of with 4 inch gun.

The British tanker reached Amsterdam after being attacked by Luftwaffe Heinkel He 111 bomber in the North sea.

Sir Edmund Ironside and Lord Gort, decorated with the grand Cross of Legion of Honour by General Gamelin.

Rationing scheme came into operation, those foods affected being sugar, butter, bacon and ham.
