Events On This Day

It was reported that the battle in Kuhmo sector of central Finland, in which Finns were attempting to encircle a Russian division were reaching a critical stage. Russian forces said to be entrenching themselves on a front north of Lake Ladoga. Russian troops launched a violent attack at Summa, in the centre of the Mannheim line in Karelian Isthmus. Russian planes bombed Rovaniemi and Kemi, on lapland front.

It was announced that both British and American aircraft had reached Finland and been in use for the past fortnight.

Balkan Entente conference opened in Belgrade, foreign ministers of Turkey, Romania, Yugoslavia and Greece meeting to discuss questions of Balkan policy.

It was reported that Greek cargo ship Eleni Statathos had been sunk by a U-boat on 28 January 1940, and the British steamer Bancrest by an Luftwaffe aircraft attack on 29-30 January 1940.

Lord Mayors Red Cross and St John's fund reached over £1,000,000.
