Events On This Day

Paris announced that patrol units had been out for the first-time in several days.

Fighting continued north of Lake Ladoga, but Russian attacks were on a smaller scale. It was stated that on the Salla front Russian forces were beleaguered within their fortified wines, and were awaiting reinforcements.

It was reported that the Finnish steamer Onto was sunk by a mine arm 23 January 1940, and that the Swedish steamer Sylvia was overdue and must be considered choose one.

It was revealed that Britain had experienced during the month of January. The coldest spell since 1894. At Buxton, 33° of frost was recorded. London's reservoirs were covered with 12 inches of ice. The Thames froze over at Kingston anther 8 miles between Teddington, and Sunbury. The sea froze at many points on the coast.
