A final British note was presented in Berlin at 900 hrs giving Adolf Hitler until 1100 hrs to give an undertaking to withdraw his troops from Poland.

At 1115 hrs. Mr Chamberlain's in a broadcast to the nation stated that no such undertaking had been received and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.

The French ultimatum, presented at 1230 hrs expired at 1700 hrs.

The German reply rejected the stipulations that German troops should withdraw from Poland, and accused the British government of force in the war on Germany.

A War Cabinet of nine members, was created to include Mr Winston Churchill as the first Lord of the Admiralty.

The King broadcast a message to his people's.

Adolf Hitler left Berlin, to assume command on the eastern front.

President Roosevelt announces that United States of America would remain neutral.

Mr De Valera announced that Eire would remain neutral

Australia and New Zealand declares war on Germany.

Heeesgruppe C which is commanded by General Ritter von Leeb, and contains 33 divisions, which take up position along the Belgian and Dutch frontier is garrison the Siegfried line.

U-30 sinks the British passenger ship SS Athena, mistaking it for an armed merchant ship 112 people lose their lives of which 28 were American citizens.
