Events On This Day

Russian troops in Salla sector, said to be in revolt. Detachment of Finnish troops reached and damaged Leningrad, Murmansk railway at three points. Finnish suicide company of 250 picked ski troops, first sent forward to attack railway, reported to have penetrated as far as Kandalaksha, an important Russian base, an arm of the White Sea. Russians have maintained pressure in the Karelian Isthmus where they now have nine divisions.

Finnish government protested to Estonia against presence of Russian destroyers in Tallinn harbour.

The British battleship torpedoed by a U-boat on 28 December 1939 reached port under own steam.

Paris reported renewal of air activity on the Western front.

The British trawler Resercho was sunk by a mine in the North sea.

The British steamer Moortoft was reported sunk.

It was also reported that the fishing trawler Adam came under Luftwaffe attack and was bombed and machine-gunned.
