After the
Panzer arm had been created it was soon realised that the artillery also needed,
to be able to keep up with the panzers and so the idea of self-propelled artillery
came about. Of course the Germans were able to utilise the tank chassis which
were obsolete as main battle tanks. Their weaknesse was mainly related to survivability.
The combination of a high silhouette and open top armour protection which was
quite thin made them vulnerable to enemy tanks and to close range machine gun
fire.
