Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. Approximately 380 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers drop food supplies at Schiphol and Alkmaar airfields, Vogelenzang, Hilversum, and Utrecht.

Ninth Air Force. No operations by United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th Bomber Division and IX and XIX Tactical Air Commands. XXIX Tactical Air Command flies demonstration mission in Klotze area.

Twelfth Air Force. General Israel takes command of XXII Tactical Air Command. Fighters fly reconnaissance over French and Italian Alps.

Fifteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters escort Balkan Air Force supply dropping missions to Yugoslavia.

Fourteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 4 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers knock out bridge at Hsihhsiassuchi. 111 fighter-bombers, operating in flights of 2 to 4 aircraft, attack numerous targets throughout South and East China.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Matsuyama airfield and secondary nearby targets and later bomb Toshien, Toko, and Kiirun. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound town of Mato. A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers fly numerous attack sorties in support of ground forces in North and South Luzon. Fighter-bombers fly support missions over Panay Island. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kudat and Keningau airfields. P-38 Lightning fighters hit Ranau and Labuan airstrips while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers support Australian troops at Tarakan Island. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Limboeng airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers over Indochina bomb Dong Hoi warehouses.

Seventh Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters from Saipan sweep Truk Atoll, strafing airfields on Moen, seaplane base at Dublon, and shipping off Param, off Moen, and between Dublon and Fefan.
