Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. More than 700 heavy bombers attack Kriegsmarine U-boat yards at Kiel 2 heavy bombers bomb Flensburg airfield as a target. 12 fighters groups fly close and area support.

Ninth Air Force. Operational Headquarters of XXIX Tactical Air Command moves to Haltern. About 230 medium bombers and light bombers attack Holzminden and Hameln marshalling yards, town of Gottingen, 2 targets, and fly leaflet mission. Fighters fly escort, fly patrols and armed reconnaissance, support United States 9th Armoured Division in Warburg area, XX Corps East of Werra River toward Muhlhausen and in Kassel area, XII Corps in Gotha and Suhl areas, and 2d and 8th Armoured Divisions in Teutoburger Forest and Neuhaus.

Twelfth Air Force. During 2-3 April 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light bombers bomb marshalling yard at Mantua, several Po River crossings and other command targets in Po Valley. Weather hampers operations during the day. Medium bombers cancel most missions, but manage to bomb Po Valley bridges at Camposanto, Usigliano, and Modena. XXII Tactical Air Command including Brazilian and South African Air Force (SAAF) units blast command, fuel dumps, methane plants, trains motor transport at numerous points in North Italy mainly Po Valley, including Parma, Modena, Fidenza, Lodi, Bergamo, Reggio Emilia, and Piacenza.

Fifteenth Air Force. 95 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb Tainach Stein railroad bridge. Other P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly reconnaissance and escort missions. Bad weather prevents heavy bomber operations.

Tenth Air Force. Bad weather again causes cancellation of most scheduled strikes. A few fighter-bombers hit Japanese held wooded area near Kenglong. Transports complete 383 sorties to forward areas.

Fourteenth Air Force. 17 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Pinglo, Ninh Binh railroad yards, knock out bridge at Thinh Duc, and damage bridges at Gian Khau and Mon Cay. 60 fighter-bombers knock out bridges at Hsitu and between Chuting and Hengyang, destroy pontoon bridges in Kanchou area, hit Yangtong airfield, pound Hai Duong railroad yards, and hit river traffic and other targets at several locations including Hongay, Cao Bang, Tayu, Hankow, Kanchou, Yoyang, and Ishan Hwaiyuanchen areas.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). Hong Kong docks are again bombed by United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields, butanol plant, and railroad yards at Kagi while A-20 Havoc light bombers sweep other rail targets. On Luzon fighter-bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Balete Pass Baguio Naguilian area North Cagayan Valley supply targets, Laguna de Bay area, and Infanta, also, Miri airfield, troops in Cebu City area, and targets on Tarakan Island are bombed. Medium bombers attack North Hainan Island.

Twentieth Air Force. During 3-4 April 1945, 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's mine waters off Hiroshima. Twice during early morning, 48 B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's hit aircraft plant at Shizuoka, 68 attack Koizumi aircraft factory and urban areas in Tokyo, and 100 strike aircraft plant at Tachikawa and urban area of Kawasaki.
