Japanese reject Potsdam ultimatum. Nevertheless General Marshall directs General MacArthur and Wedemeyer and Admiral Nimitz to proceed with plans for a surrender.

Fourteenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb supply convoys moving through Siang Chiang Valley. 40 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, and P-61 Black Widow, night fighters hit various targets in South and East China, and in Indochina, chiefly river transport, but also troop concentrations, railroad traffic, and many targets. Target areas include Nanyang, Suchow, Hankou, Sinyang, Anking, Anyang, Lohochai, Kukong, Takhing, Koyiu, Samshui, Pingsiang, Kian, Yungcheng, Yingtak, and Wuchou.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). 60 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-26 Invader light bombers bomb Omura airfield. 4 of the planes hit airfields at Izumi. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support the strike and also hit numerous nearby targets. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, failing to find targets on shipping sweep over Korean waters, bomb shipping, a railroad, and a warehouse in Sendai area. Covering P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers also hit nearby targets. 80 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters bomb Sendai, leaving much of the town in flames. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers on photo reconnaissance of South Kyushu destroy trains and small craft. Nearly 80 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters attack Miyazaki, Karasehara, and Tomitaka areas, firing warehouses and damaging barracks, hangars, towers, and other buildings, and blast buildings and construction on and near Shibushi airfield. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kota Waringin airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters support ground forces East of Ilagan, near Kiangan, and East of Manila in Infanta sector.

VII Fighter Command. INVO Jima based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighters attack airfields, railroads, and other tactical targets throughout the Kobe Osaka area.

Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on way to the Kurils are soon recalled because of weather disturbances.
