Japan. Occupation in force begins when United States Army
Air Force (USAAF) 11th Airborne Division is flown to Atsugi
airfield and Marines land at Yokosuka naval base. American
and British forces land in the Tokyo area. General MacArthur
flies from Manila to organise the United States occupation.
Meanwhile, the American cruiser USS San Juan starts to evacuate
Allied prisoners of war detained in the Japanese home islands.
In Hong Kong. A British naval squadron reoccupies the colony.
In Burma. Japanese forces based at Abya surrender to the Allies.
In Canberra. At a meeting of the Australian Advisory War Council,
it is decided that the Council should be dissolved immediately
after representatives of the Opposition state that the necessity
for its existence has disappeared in view of the end of the
war.
In Mexico City. The government of Mexico recognises the Spanish
Republican government as the legitimate government of Spain.
In Occupied Germany. A proclamation to the German people is
signed today formally announcing the establishment of the
Allied Control Council and its assumption of supreme authority
in Germany.
