B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 4 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
attack supply movement through Siang Chiang Valley, hit a
freighter and 2 smaller vessels off Shuitang, and pound troops
near Kian. About 90 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, P-47 Thunderbolt
fighters, and P-61 Black Widow, night fighters disrupt Japanese movement throughout
South and East China and in Indochina. The fighter-bombers
concentrate on river transport.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). 137 Ie Shima based United States
Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters rocket and
strafe airfields, oil stores, railroad yards, warehouses,
industry, gun positions, and other targets on Kyushu at or
near Kanoya, Metargetsubara, Tachiarai, Kurume, Saga, and
Junicho. 21 more P-47 Thunderbolt fighters attack shipping
at Yatsushiro. A-26 Invader light bombers and B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers pound airfields at Kanoya. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, sweepig over Inland Sea,
destroy 2 small cargo vessels and a patrol boat. 70 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb shipping at Kure, claiming direct hits
on a battleship and aircraft carrier. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters in support of ground forces
hit enemy positions in Mankayan Kiangan area and in Marikina
area. Other P-38 Lightning fighters hit troop concentrations
on Jolo Island. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers support ground
forces on Negros Island.
Twentieth Air Force. During 28-
29
July 1945, 471 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress
heavy bomber's drop incendiary bombs on Tsu, Aomori, Ichinomiya,
Ujiyamada, Ogaki, and Uwajima, while 76 others bomb oil refinery
at Shimotsu.
VII Fighter Command. 140 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, based on INVO Jima, hit 9 objectives
airfields and military targets in wide area around Tokyo and
attack a destroyer escort along Chiba Peninsula, leaving it
burning.
