Eighth Air Force. More than 300 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Zeitz synthetic
oil plant, Plauen tank factory, and cities of Meiningen, Wurzburg,
Oelsnitz, and Markt Erlbach. 12 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
groups fly close and area support.
Ninth Air Force. Approximately 300 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) medium bombers and light bombers hit at Wurzburg,
Gemunden, and Flieden, town of Ruckers, and 2 targets. Fighters
escort 9th Bomber Division, fly armed reconnaissance, hit
special targets and support various ground forces along the
front. Fighter support is accorded United States 2d, 3d, 7th,
and 9th Armoured Division in Hachenburg, Montabaur, and Limburg
areas, XII Corps along the Main River from Frankfurt Main
to Aschaffenburg, and Ninth Army elements in bridgehead area
around Gahlen.
Twelfth Air Force. Weather grounds medium bombers and hampers
operations in general. During 26-
27
March 1945, 3 light bombers hit bridges at Cittadella and
Verona. Fighter-bombers, operating on reduced scale, hit command
targets in West Po Valley, cutting a road bridge and several
railroads, and attacking several targets.
Fifteenth Air Force. More than 500 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24
Liberator heavy bombers, escorted by P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
and P-38 Lightning fighters attack marshalling yards at Wiener
Neustadt, Strasshof, Bruck an der Leitha, Neunkirchen, Bratislava
and Szombathely. 46 P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb bridge
at Ybbs while 26 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, covered by
13 others, strafe rail traffic in Wiener Neustadt, Vienna,
Budejovice areas. Other P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang
fighter-bombers fly reconnaissance operations.
Tenth Air Force. 28 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters and 10 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers operating
over and behind Central Burma battle lines attack artillery
positions, troop concentrations, road command, and supply
areas. 522 air supply sorties are being completed throughout
the day.
Fourteenth Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 80 fighter-bombers, operating
individually or in small flights, continue to disrupt mobility
and supply lines throughout South and East China, hitting
numerous targets chiefly trucks; tanks; supply areas, horses,
troops, artillery pieces. Several of the fighter-bombers also
damage considerably Puchou airfield.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighter-bombers bomb Legaspi
and targets in the area including fuel dump at Camalig. Fighter-bombers
hit numerous targets in North Luzon at Solvec Cove, Baguio,
Mankayan, Sante Fe, and other areas. In South West Luzon A-20
Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers support United States
ground forces, hitting Ternate, and towns in Tayabas and Batangas
Provinces. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and A-20 Havoc light
bombers in Central Phil hit Cebu City and East coast targets.
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Takao.
Seventh Air Force. 21 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers from Iwo Jima bomb and strafe
Susaki airfield while 16 bomb and strafe weather and radar
stations on Chichi Jima and town of Kitamura. 9 Guam based
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Marcus. During 26-
27
March 1945, 3 heavy bombers from Guam on individual snooper
strikes hit Chichi Jima. Enemy makes final attack on Iwo Jima
in early morning attempt to infiltrate bivouac area. Capture
and occupation phase of Iwo ends at 0800 when General Chaney
becomes Island Commander.
Eleventh Air Force. 2 missions, each by 4 United States Army
Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, attempt to
bomb canneries on the Masugawa and the Hayakegawa rivers.
Fighters drive off Masugawa mission. Other mission cannot
find target due to weather. 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
bomb Kataoka naval base.
