Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. Troop Movement Section is organised at Headquarters Eighth Air Force under Director of Operations. It is to be the control unit over all redeployment activities.

Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers blast Siangtan supply areas. 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, supported by 7 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, hit railroad targets and other targets around Sinyang, Kiaotow, Sintsiang, and Chenghsien. About 75 fighter-bombers and reconnaissance aeroplanes continue harassment of enemy movement and supply lines throughout South and East China, escort of C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft transports, and surveillance of enemy forces.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Taichu and Tainan airfields. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and fighter-bombers sweep Formosa hitting numerous targets. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighter-bombers support ground forces in North Luzon and pound concentrations in South Luzon. Fighter-bombers also support ground forces on Negros. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Fort Brook and Sarawak while B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters attack defences on Tarakan Island.

Twentieth Air Force. Advance air echelon of 509th Composite Group arrives at North Field on Tinian. The 509th is scheduled to deliver atomic bomb attacks on Japan. Its Commanding Officer is Colonel Paul W Tibbets Junior, a pilot with a distinguished record in the 97th Bomber Group (H) in Europe and North Africa. During 18-19 May 1945, 30 B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's mine Shimonoseki Strait and Tsuruga Harbour.

Seventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters from Ie Shima make bombing, strafing, and rocket attacks on radar and ground installations on Kume Jima in Amami Gunto. Other P-47 Thunderbolt fighters fly heckler strikes against Kyushu during 18-19 May 1945.

Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb naval, harbour, and airfield targets in Kataoka. Another B-24 Liberator heavy bombers searches for enemy radar along the Kuril Islands.
