heavy bombers hit 2 synthetic oil plants, 2 power stations,
an instruments works, an industrial complex around a tank
factory, 2 marshalling yards, and 5 city areas in West and
North Central Germany. 13 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers groups,
plus an extra P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers section, provide
support.
Ninth Air Force. 650 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
A-20 Havoc light bombers, A-26 Invader light bombers, and B-26 Marauder medium
bombers bomb 5 marshalling yards, 2 command centres, an ordnance
depot, 3 city areas, and several targets. Attacks are to impede
enemy movement of troops, equipment, and supplies in face
of advancing Allied forces. Fighters fly escort, patrols,
and armed reconnaissance, cover Remagen bridgehead, support
United States III Corps Northeast of Remagen, co-operate with
XII Corps which has penetrated several miles East of Bad Kreuznach
at one point, and operate with XX Corps which at one point
reaches as far East as Birkenfeld.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers during
16-17 March
1945, bomb Po River crossings, other bridges, lights, and
movements in Po Valley. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb
railroad bridges and fills at Cittadella, San Michele all'
Adige, Aldeno, Bozzolo, Canneto sull' Oglio, Pontetidone,
Pizzighettone, and Pontevico. Fighters and fighter-bombers
are greatly restricted by bad weather but score effectively
against dumps, bridges, railroads, marshalling yards, trains,
and buildings mainly in Po Valley.
Fifteenth Air Force. Bad weather grounds heavy bombers. 98
P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb Ptuj and Zagreb railroad
bridges, Klinca Sela marshalling yard, and Sisak marshalling
yard and bridge. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters
escort, drop supplies in Yugoslavia and P-38 Lightning fighters
and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly reconnaissance and reconnaissance
escort. During 17-
18
March 1945, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers drop supplies in
North Italy.
Tenth Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters support British 36th Division around
Mogok. 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb troops and supplies
near Namlan. 33 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit road targets
behind enemy lines, concentrating on Hayti and Mong Yai sectors.
40 other fighter-bombers attack troops, supplies, tanks, and
trucks behind the battle line including Ta-mun, Namsaw, Pansupe,
Tal-ti, and Kankang areas. Transports continue to fly troops
and supplies to front line areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 12 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
damage 21 locomotives and a river launch in Peking area, around
Tsinan, and between Taiyuan and Tatung.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). Formosa airfields are pounded by
United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers operating in force. On Luzon nearly 500 sorties are
flown in support of ground forces by B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighters. B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers hit Panay beaches preparatory to allied landings
on
18 March 1945,
and bomb troops in combat areas on Mindanao. Bacolod airfield
is also bombed.
Twentieth Air Force. 70 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's hit storage dump at Rangoon.
2 others bomb targets Sagyi airfield and warehouses at Bassein.
Seventh Air Force. 11 Guam based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Chichi Jima. During
17-
18 March
1945, 5 more hit Susaki airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly bombing and photo missions
over Matsuwa, concentrating on the airfield, and on returning
photograph Shasukotan, Harumukotan, and Onnekotan.
