Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. More than 1,250 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack 6 marshalling yards, 2 airfields, 2 ordnance depots, 2 oil storage depots, and an ammunition factory in South Germany. 15 fighters groups provide close and area support.

Ninth Air Force. 689 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers and light bombers strike marshalling yards at Bernburg, Oschersleben, Zwickau, and Kothen, Naumburg ordnance depot, Bamberg motor transport plant, and several other targets. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division, fly patrols, sweeps, leaflet mission, and armed reconnaissance claiming 43 Luftwaffe aircraft shot down, and support United States 3d and 9th Armoured Divisions in Nordhausen and Ringleben, Sachsenburg, Rothenberga areas, 2d Armoured Division as it reaches Elbe River South of Magdeburg in a record drive of 57 miles, XVI Corps along the Ruhr River at Witten, XX Corps as it crosses the Saale River at Weimar and overruns Buchenwald concentration camp and Allied prisoner camp nearby, XII Corps in Coburg, Rottenbach area, and VIII Corps as it approaches the Saale River South of Weimar.

Twelfth Air Force. During 10-11 April 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light bombers bomb bridges at Lavis, Ala, Rovereto, San Michele all'Adige, and San Ambrogio di Valpolicella, and hit vehicles, Po River crossings and targets in Po Valley. Medium bombers continue to support British Eighth Army forces between Imola and Comacchio Lagoon, bomb guns Southeast of La Spezia in front of United States Fifth Army advance, and bomb 4 bridges on the Brenner line. XXII Tactical Air Command fighter-bombers also fly support on Eighth Army front, and hit command including Brenner line and fuel and ammunition dumps in North Italy.

Fifteenth Air Force. 544 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit command in North Italy, concentrating on transportation system feeding into Brenner area, in effort to hamper enemy's supply and escape routes. The heavy bombers bomb bridges at Padua, Vipiteno, Campodazzo, Ponte Gardena, and Campo di Trens, marshalling yards at Bronzolo and Ora, vehicle repair shop at Osoppo, and fuel depot at Goito. 40 P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb Rosenheim railroad bridge. 40 other P-38 Lightning fighters and 29 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers strafe rail traffic in Munich, Regensburg, Plzen, Linz, and Salzburg areas. Over 250 fighters escort heavy bomber missions, reconnaissance and supply missions, and operations against North Italian targets by Mediterranean Allied Tactical Air Force (MATAF) aircraft.

Tenth Air Force. 54 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighter-bombers hit troop and supply concentrations near Mong Kung and Mong Nim, attack trucks and targets in other areas behind battle line, and sweep several roads South of bomb line. Transports fly 424 sorties carrying men and supplies to forward areas.

Fourteenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Hsihhsiassuchi, 5 pound Pinglo barracks and storage area, and a few others hit Yanglowtung railroad yards and targets East of Paoching. 150 fighter-bombers attack troops, river, road and rail traffic, and a variety of targets scattered throughout South and East China and North Indochina.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Cotabato. Japanese defences North West of Guadalupe are pounded by heavy bombers. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit bivouac East of Negritos. On Luzon B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighter-bombers bomb numerous targets including Fuga Island, Cagayan Valley areas, Santa Fe, bridges and other command in Iligan, Naguilian, Manga, and Tuguegarao, and troops and supply concentration North of Imugan. Troop support strikes are flown in Solvec Cove area and East of Manila. Baguio and troop concentration in Batangas area and on Bicol peninsula are bombed. At Iriga, defences are hit with napalm. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Okayama while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit several targets including Ts'eng Wen sugar refinery, Seiko, Sunbon-sha, and Shasekiryo. P-38 Lightning fighters attack gun positions at Tarakan.

Seventh Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur hit Cotabato supply and personnel areas. 18 Guam based B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound positions on Eten Island.

Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters together with Navy aircraft pick up bomb filled paper balloons over Attu and East of Adak. One balloon over Attu is shot down.
