Extremely heavy bombing raids were carried out on Essen and
the Ruhr areas by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers
by night.
In Libya. General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque Chad troops
captured outpost of Brach in the Fezzan.
Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces counter-attacked
at Velikie Luki however were repelled by intensive Russian
defence.
In Australasia. In attempt to land reinforcements at Lae 130
Japanese aircraft were destroyed or damaged.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26
Marauder medium bombers, with fighters escort, hit airfields
10 miles South of Tripoli while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
attack shipping off North Tunisian coast. Fighters fly reconnaissance
and patrol, and escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft.
Ninth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters fly cover mission for The British Royal Air Force
(RAF).
Tenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers, with escort of 9 P-40 fighters,
bomb Bhamo. Other fighters strafe targets in Wanling, Bhamo,
and Loiwing areas.
Fifth Air Force. United States heavy bombers, medium bombers,
light bombers, and fighters, along with Royal Australian Air
Force (RAAF) planes, continue to pound convoy as it leaves
Lae. Airfields, supply dumps, and troop concentrations at
Lae and at Salamaua are also hit. 4 days of attacks on the
convoy result in 2 transports sunk, several vessels damaged,
and about 80 aeroplanes destroyed.
Eleventh Air Force. 50 knot winds at Adak prevent missions.
