Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 112 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack industrial areas of Wesel and Duren.

Ninth Air Force. Over 200 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers dispatched to attack airfields at Montdidier and Meulan-Les Mureaux are forced to abort mission because of bad weather.

Twelfth Air Force. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) bombers hit gun position along British Eighth and United States Fifth Army fronts, shipping at Ancona harbour, and town of Ulcinj. Durazzo is bombed at night. XII A Support Command and other fighters of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) hit harbour and shipping at Split and train near Metkovic, and attack bridges, road junctions, town area, and trucks in Mignano Cassino and Pontecorvo areas.

Fifteenth Air Force. Bad weather cancels United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bomber operations.

Fourteenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Amoy harbour, claiming several boats sunk. 6 P-40 fighters attack bridge at Hsiangyangchiao, causing only minor damage.

Fifth Air Force. 25 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with escort of more than 60 P-38 Lightning fighters, bomb Rapopo airstrip. A large force of enemy fighters intercepts the formations and in the ensuing battle 5 P-38 Lightning fighters are lost. United States aeroplanes claim more than 20 fighters shot down and several more destroyed on the ground. 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Wewak and more than 40 others turn back when fighters escort is intercepted by aeroplanes over Nadzab. Enemy aircraft attack Nadzab and Bena Bena. 16 United States aircraft are destroyed or damaged by the raids, but 14 aeroplanes are shot down by United States fighters.

Thirteenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb barge concentration and beach targets in Atsinima Ray. 21 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Buka airfield.
