United States of America. United States Navy Department. Announced
that in January United States forces had occupied Amchitka,
in Rat Island group of Aleutians.
European Theatre of Operations (ETO). General Devers is appointed
commander of European Theatre of Operations (ETO).
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
6-7
May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons
bomb docks and shipping at Trapani as diversion for mine-laying
mission off Malta. Next morning, P-40 fighters attack motor
vessels, quay and dock area at Tunis harbour. Northwest African
Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, light bombers, and medium
bombers hit El Aouina airfield and traffic on roads around
Tunis, especially Tunis-Bizerte road, as Allied forces of
General Alexander's 18 Army Group overrun both Tunis and Bizerte,
splitting the enemy's forces.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit town of Kelibia. P-40 fighters
bomb and strafe shipping in Gulf of Tunis, severely damaging
3 boats.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
bomb airfields, supply dumps, and other targets at Madang
while A-20 Havoc light bombers hit forces in Green's Hill
area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Penfoei.
Eleventh Air Force. An attempted mission to Kiska by 6 P-40
fighters aborts due to weather.
