Events On This Day

North Africa. Enemy counter-attacks dislodged our troops from hills West of Mateur.

In Libya. General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque Chad forces captured outpost of Oum-el-Araneb in the Fezzan.

In the Mediterranean. Aircraft from Malta bombed La Goulette and Tunis.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked Japanese positions near Akyab.

In Australasia. United States of America heavy bombers raided airfield at Munda.

United States of America. United States heavy Liberators bombers carried out an intensive bombing raid on Kiska.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers, in 2 forces, hit military camp South of Kairouan. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Kairouan railroad yards. Fighters escort bombers, carry out patrols and reconnaissance flights, and accompany C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft on transport operations.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound forces in Sanananda Point area; A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Lae airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and P-38 Lightning fighters attack convoy heading South West off coast of New Britain bound for Lae. a single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs Gasmata airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. Reconnaissance is flown over Amchitka, the Semichis, Agattu, and Attu. Flotsam sighted outside of Holtz Bay confirms that freighter bombed on previous day sank. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers , and 12 P-38 Lightning fighters take off to attack Kiska. The P-38 Lightning fighters and 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers turn back due to weather. The B-25 Mitchell medium bombers find the target obscured and 5 Zeros waiting to intercept them, whereupon they turn back without attacking. The 5 remaining B-24 Liberator heavy bombers circle Kiska without contacting enemy aeroplanes. One of the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, exploiting a break in cloud cover, bombs Kiska submarine base area which the others then bomb also through the clouds.
