Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the destroyer HMS Firedrake which was sunk on 17 December 1942 by the Kriegsmarine U-211. 27 Survivors were picked up by the British corvette HMS Sunflower.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again carried out another bombing raid on the Ruhr.

Russian Front. Nalchik, in the Caucasus, and Chernyshkovsky, South West of Stalingrad, captured by Russians ground forces.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers and United States of America heavy bombers bombed railway yards at Mandalay.

In Australasia. Allied air attacks on Lae and Gasmata.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers sent, in 2 forces, to bomb Bizerte are forced to abort by heavy clouds over target. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit railroad yards at Kairouan while A-20 Havoc light bombers attack Cherichera. Fighters provide escort for the bombers and for C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft transport runs, and fly reconnaissance and patrol missions.

Ninth Air Force. Colonel Robert Kauch replaces General Adler as Commanding Officer IX Air Service Command.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers from Gaya and Pandaveswar pound marshalling yard at Mandalay, halting northbound flow of supplies. Tracks and cars in South half of the marshalling yard are heavily bombed, causing fires visible for 70 miles heavy bombers also damage 15,000-ton transport at mouth of Rangoon River. 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 9 P-40 fighters hit rail targets at Naba.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound Sanananda Point area as preparations for allied offensive in that sector get underway. A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields, antiaircraft positions and buildings at Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, on single-plane flights, bomb airfields at Lae and attack schooners off Gasmata and Cape Kwoi.

Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 3 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers , 3 B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and 10 P-40 fighters en route to Kiska, are forced back near Segula by snow squalls and low ceiling. The weather aircraft flies unsuccessful reconnaissance over Kiska. Photo reconnaissance is flown over Amchitka. An OA-10 investigates flares reported near Kagalaska Strait.
