Eighth Air Force. Note from Air Chief Marshal Portal to Combined
Chiefs of Staff states that POINTBLANK (Combined Bomber Offensive
(Plan) against German Air Force) is 3 months behind in relationship
to tentative date for OVERLORD which had been set for
1
May 1944. This brings more pressure on Eighth Air Force
to destroy industrial plants of importance to aircraft production.
Twelfth Air Force. Twelfth Air Force transfers its entire
II Air Service Area Command with all of its subordinate units
to Fifteenth Air Force, where it shortly becomes XV Air Force
Services Command. This is a major step toward making the Fifteenth
a separate, self sufficient Air Force. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb harbour and marshalling yard at Sibenik. Fighter-bombers,
along with Desert Air Force (DAF) aeroplanes, hit tanks and
trucks in Guardiagrele, Lanciano areas. Other fighter-bombers
attack vessel at Sibenik and vehicles and trains North of
Rome. Anzio and Nettuno are also bombed.
Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters escort, hit Rome,
Casale airfield. B-26 Marauder medium bombers and escorting
P-38 Lightning fighters are recalled due to weather. Other
P-38 Lightning fighters escort supply mission to Yugoslavia.
Fourteenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters attack barracks and other buildings at Wanling.
Fifth Air Force. More than 60 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb Cape Gloucester airfield. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers sinks several barges in Johann Albrecht Harbour while
another bombs a large transport near New Hanover. 20 B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Waingapoe. A-20 Havoc light bombers
attack villages around Finschhafen. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters
shoot down several aeroplanes over Wewak.
Thirteenth Air Force. 23 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kieta Harbour and nearby
supply and bivouac areas. 6 others hit Aitara Mission. 21
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Bonis. Fighter aircraft
(Army Air Force and Navy) on patrol hit targets of opportunity
in areas from Numa Numa to Koromira, at Mosiga and Chabai,
and West of Mutupina Point. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on
armed reconnaissance hit a variety of targets, including Kieta,
Green Island, Greenwich Island, and Korovo.
