Events On This Day

Enemy blockade runner in Atlantic intercepted and scuttled.

North Africa. Heavy Allied air attacks on La Goulette, Susa and Sfax, enemy bombers twice raided Bone.

In the Mediterranean. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States of America aircraft made first daylight raid on Crete.

In Australasia. Allied troops occupied Buna mission. Heavy bombers attacked Japanese surface armada at Rabaul.

Eighth Air Force. 4 radar-equipped B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly moling, or intruder, mission aimed at harassing enemy in weather unsuitable for large missions by alerting air-raid crews in area north of the Ruhr. This mission and 2 subsequent missions in January are foiled by clear weather over target area.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb harbour and shipping at La Goulette. Escorting P-38 Lightning fighters and Me 109's engage in air battle, each side losing 2 aeroplanes. A-20 Havoc light bombers and. DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers, with fighters escorts, consecutively raid Sousse harbour In afternoon, DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers again hit the harbour B-26 Marauder medium bombers, with fighters protection, hit bridge North of El Djem. Fighters fly escort, patrol, and reconnaissance missions, attacking enemy vehicles and aircraft. Several trucks and Fighters are claimed destroyed.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields at Heraklion. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit airfields at Kastelli and Pediada.

Tenth Air Force. Chine Air Task Force (CATF) Fighters continue to hit transportation targets, strafing truck convoy on Burma Road. The strikes begin near Loiwing and cover 30 miles of highway. At least 5 trucks are destroyed and others damaged. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Monywa airfield.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, hit airfields and targets at Lae and Gasmata. Buna Mission is finally overrun by Australian and United States forces.

Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 3 B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters heading for Kiska are forced back by bad weather. The weather aircraft cannot see into Kiska Harbour or Gertrude Cove. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly photo reconnaissance over Amchitka and encounter poor weather. An OA-10 unsuccessfully searches islands East of Segula for missing OA-10.
