Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 154 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack port of Bremen and targets in the area. Unfavourable cloud conditions and malfunction of blind bombing equipment cause more than 200 heavy bombers to abort. 13 aircraft are lost on mission.

Ninth Air Force. 53 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Chievres airfield. 71 sent to bomb Cambrai, Epinoy airfield abort mission due to bad weather.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Sarajevo and road and rail bridges at Giulianova. United States, South African Air Force (SAAF), and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) light bombers hit enemy strong points at San Vito Chietino and the Castelfrentano, Lanciano, Fossacesia areas. Allied fighter-bombers bomb enemy forward positions around Fossacesia and Lanciano.

Fifteenth Air Force. 70 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb airfields and marshalling yards at Grosseto. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, bomb Furbara area. Many other medium bombers and heavy bombers are prevented from bombing targets by bad weather.

Fourteenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields, town area, and warehouse section at Swatow, 2 bomb power station and nearby targets at Amoy, and 2 attack barges in nearby coastal areas. 24 P-40 fighters drop food and ammunition to Chinese troops at Changte, strafe camp in Hsutu Lake area, damage a vessel in Tien-hsin Lake and attack numerous small craft in channels between 3 Hsutu and Tungting Lakes and between Tsowshih and Hofuh.

Fifth Air Force. 35 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Cape Gloucester. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb barracks at Manokwari.

Thirteenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with fighters cover, attack Tinputs Harbour and targets in area from Numa Numa to Kieta. 21 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Kieta. P-39 fighters join Navy dive bombers in strike on Mosigetta warehouse area while a fighters patrol attacks Gazelle Harbour and gun positions South of Torokina Plantation.
