Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. Weather prevents most Twelfth Air Force operations planned for the day. No missions are flown by XII Bomber Command. XII A Support Command A-36 Apache dive bomber hit several highways and bridges in advance of battle line and attack gun positions in Vairano area and transportation targets in Rome area.

Fourteenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Mangshih. 6 P-40 fighters strafe warehouse and revetments at Yoyang airfield. 3 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 7 P-38 Lightning fighters hit barracks at Fort Bayard. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on shipping sweep over South China Sea damage 2 freighters near Saint John Islands and sink a junk West of Kwangchow Wan.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters hit Gasmata area. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters attack barges at Talasea and strafe surrounding area. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters also strafe area from Sio to Fortification Point.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters and P-39 fighters join Navy fighters and dive bombers in attacks on Kara and Ballale Island airfields. Almost 200 aircraft are involved in the 2 strikes. Kara airfield is also pounded by 19 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers.

Zone of Interior. Army Air Force School of Applied Tactics is redesignated Army Air Force Tactical Centre.
