Mikra. XII A Support Command and Desert Air Force (DAF) fighters
and fighter-bombers attack gun emplacements and road junctions
in battle area along East coast and in centre of Italy, destroying
also many vehicles and parked aircraft in Ancona area, where
railroad facilities are also hit. Schooner at Porto Civitanova
is left smoking. Medium bombers of Northwest African Tactical
Bomber Force (NATBF) bomb Terracina and an ammunition dump.
Fourteenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 15 P-40 fighters pound railroad
yards at Haiphong. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack several
vessels at Kiungshan, claiming 4 sunk or badly damaged. Later
6 more B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit shipping nearby, claiming
1 freighter sunk. Airfield at Kiungshan is strafed by 1 of
the medium bombers.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers fly small raid against Pombelaa. Fighters
shoot down 2 heavy bombers. United States gunners claim 11
aircraft downed. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit targets
in Tanimbar Islands.
Thirteenth Air Force. Kahili airfield is hit twice during
the day by B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, P-40 fighters, P-39 fighters,
and Navy fighters and dive bombers. Buka Island airfield is
strafed by P-38 Lightning fighters and then bombed and strafed
by B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters.
P-39 fighters and P-40 fighters join Navy fighters and dive
bombers in strike on Kara airfield.
